A TRACE OF MEMORY
FROM THE SMALL JEWELRY SHOP NAME MIAN TECK TO THE 4TH GENERATION OF ART DECO LEGACY
There are times when little things can make a big difference. In 1914, a small jewelry shop titled “Mian Teck” was founded on Baan Mor street, which was then the jewelry hub of Bangkok, by a Chinese family who migrated to Thailand to make a living. With a talented trading skill and hospitality of its founders, Mian Teck became popular by word of mouth. Bangkokian elites and beyond travelled to the shop to find unique jewelry pieces that matched their styles.
THE STEPPING STONE
When the business was handed down to the third generation of the family, the Golden Age of Baan Mor already faded, and jewelry shops became mushrooming all over the city. It was then that Mian Teck took a step further by making its way to an international arena. In this year, the Thai Department of Commerce launched the 1ST Bangkok Gems & Jewelry Fair, aimed to make Thailand the jewelry hub of the world, and Mian Teck was one of the 48 exhibitors invited to join at one of Bangkok most luxurious hotel – the Dusit Thani. Today, the fair covers an area of 100,000 sqm with over 3,500 booths and tens of thousands of buyers annually.
Mian Teck was among the pioneers in the Thai jewelry industry to exhibit their creations in International trade fairs, from Italy to Basel and Hong Kong, and the factory was founded to cater the needs of buyers from Europe, United States, India and China. It was through collaborations with these customers that Mian Teck developed its expertise in creating exceptional Art Deco and Edwardian-inspired pieces, forging the character of what would later become the Maison’s signature style. The design and know-how generated through years of global experience resulted in the presence of its creations in prestigious auction houses like Sotheby’s and Christie’s.
THE AUSPICIOUS CEREMONY
To commemorate Thailand’s King Bhumibol Adulyadej Golden Jubilee – the 50th Anniversary of the accession to throne, Mian Teck, together with the Thai Gem & Jewelry Traders Association hosted a project with REUGE of Switzerland to create special limited-edition music boxes that play His Majesty musical compositions, raising money for charity.
THE GREAT CELEBRATION
To celebrate 100 years of journey in the jewelry business, CHAVANA, the new official brand developed by the fourth generation of the family, is launched to pay homage to the passion of the founders. With the name derived from the family surname, CHAVANA is a way to celebrate Mian Teck legacy, a bridge between the past generation and the present. CHAVANA will be Thailand’s latest jewelry brand with its Art Deco and Edwardian-inspired jewels, while continuing to embrace the style and craftsmanship that Mian Teck has known to master.
